Safair and its subsidiary FlySafair are a South African charter and low-cost airline based in Kempton Park and based at OR Tambo Airport .
history
Safair was founded in March 1969 by the shipping company Safmarine and began flight operations on March 18, 1970.
It served the local and regional freight market until the 1990s. In 1998 she specialized in aircraft maintenance and overnight courier services, after which she concentrated on leasing and charter businesses. In 1998, Safair acquired 49% of the Irish cargo airline Air Contractors and was taken over by Imperial Holdings , which also owns the cargo airline Imperial Air Cargo , in December of that year for US $ 40 million . In 1999 Safair took control of the South African charter airline National Airways and the trading company Streamline Aviation .
A planned merger with Airlink was canceled in October 2018.
