Air Niugini is the national airline of Papua New Guinea , based in Port Moresby and based at Port Moresby Airport .
history
Air Niugini was founded in 1973 as the National Airline of Papua New Guinea . The 1990s were difficult economic times for the airline, which were only overcome after 2000.
On September 22, 2011, it was announced that the government of Papua New Guinea had approved a merger with Airlines PNG , the country's second largest airline. This merger has not yet taken place.

Incidents
Air Niugini has one fatality in its history, five aircraft had to be written off as a total loss:
- On May 31, 1995, a Fokker F28 ( aircraft registration P2-ANB ) had an accident en route from Lae to Madang when landing in Madang. After a first, aborted landing approach, it touched down too late and slipped into a ditch due to aquaplaning . The occupants got away with the horror, the machine is a total loss.
- On November 16, 1997, another Fokker F28 (P2-ANH) came off the runway on landing in Lae and again ended up in a ditch. Passengers and crew were uninjured, the machine is a total write-off.
- On March 13, 1999, after a hard landing at Goroka Airport, the left main landing gear of a Fokker F28 (P2-AND) buckled and the machine came off the runway. The cause of the accident was overpressure in a shock absorber, all occupants were uninjured.
- On October 19, 2013, an ATR 42-320F (P2-PXY) had an accident while aborting take-off at Madang Airport . The overloaded and incorrectly trimmed cargo plane collided with a fence, rolled into a river at the end of the runway, and the right wing caught fire. The fire was extinguished by the integrated fire extinguishers of the engines and the use of the airport fire brigade. The three-person crew saved themselves via the emergency exit in the cockpit ceiling, and the co-pilot suffered minor injuries. Looters seized a third of the cargo consisting of cigarettes. The plane is a total loss.
- On 14 June 2018 the Company's aircraft in riots suffered during a demonstration by arson at the airport Mendi a total loss . Passengers and crew were unharmed.
- On September 28, 2018, a 13-year-old Boeing 737-800 (P2-PXE) from Pohnpei landed in heavy rain and poor visibility at Chuuk Airport 150 meters beyond the runway in a lagoon . On board were 35 passengers and 12 crew members, who rescued themselves from the plane, which was still floating about an hour after the watering, into boats that had come up. The body of a missing passenger was recovered by divers on October 1, 2018. There were several survivors, some seriously injured. The aircraft is an economic total loss.

- The word Niugini comes from the language Tok Pisin , the lingua franca of the country, which means New Guinea .
- The company's logo is a red bird of paradise , the heraldic animal of Papua New Guinea.
