Mendi is the capital of the Southern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea in the Pacific .

The city can be reached via Mount Hagen and the Highlands Highway to the northeast, or by plane via Mendi Airport . The highway continues to Tari.

Mendi has 17,119 inhabitants (as of 2000). The city is located at an altitude of 1675 m in the valley of the Mendi River, in which vegetables and coffee beans grow, and there are tea plantations near the city. There are sawmills in the village.

The Mendi tribe live around the capital, where they fence their traditional one-family gardens.
