Still Life is the sixth studio album by the British progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator . It was released in 1976.

History of origin

After the tour of the previous album Godbluff , the newly formed band returned to the studio in January 1976 to complete the material that had not yet been recorded. Remaining from the recordings of Godbluff in the previous year were “Pilgrims” and “La Rossa”, followed by three tracks “Still Life”, “My Room (Waiting for Wonderland)” and “Childlike Faith in Childhood's End”.

Style and reception

The style of Still Life is divided into two parts: The punchy “La Rossa” is the focus of the album in contrast to the other four tracks. Reviewers describe the album as cheerful and reserved compared to the previous, musically predominantly dark and aggressive releases by Van der Graaf Generator.

In terms of the lyrics, the motif “Life and Death” runs through the album as a red thread, which is particularly evident in the title track. The last song on the album Childlike Faith in Childhood's End is based on the novel The Last Generation by Arthur C. Clarke (in the original Childhood's End ), which describes the extinction of mankind on earth and the transition to a new form of existence.
