Douglas people
Stephen Arnold Douglas Volk (born February 23, 1856 in Pittsfield , Massachusetts , † February 7, 1935 in Fryeburg , Maine ) was an American painter .
Volk was the son of the sculptor Leonard Volk and was named after the politician Stephen Arnold Douglas . Volk received his first artistic lessons from his father; his second teacher was the sculptor Thomas Crawford in Rome .
Volk came to Rome with his parents around 1870, as his father became an assistant in the workshop of the sculptor Crawford. A short time later he was accepted as a student at the Accademia di San Luca . In the following year, Volk moved to the Académie de France, also based in Rome .
At the age of 17, Volk was accepted as a student in Paris by Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1873 on the recommendation of his lecturers . Just two years later, Volk was able to debut his painting “En Bretagne” on the occasion of the exhibition of the Paris salons . In 1876 Volk was invited to the World's Fair in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania. He was able to achieve a similarly great success in 1878 at the exhibition in the Paris Salon.
In early 1878, Volk returned to the United States and settled in New York . In the same year he was appointed as a lecturer at the Cooper Institute (New York). In 1886, Volk was instrumental in founding the School of Fine Arts in Minneapolis , Minn. involved and was entrusted with a teaching assignment there. In 1898 the National Academy of Design in New York elected Douglas Volk as an Associate Member ( ANA ) and a year later as a Full Member ( NA ). In 1918 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
Volk spent the last years of his life withdrawn in Fryeburg, Maine. He died there on February 7, 1935 at the age of almost 79.
