Daniel Gene Walters (born August 15, 1966 in Brunswick , Maine , † April 23, 2020 in Santee , California ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). Walters came as a catcher in the years 1992 and 1993 to a total of 84 appearances for the San Diego Padres . After his active playing career, he became an officer in the San Diego Police Department. In 2003 he was seriously injured in the course of his duties and subsequently suffered from quadriplegia .

Career

Dan Walters was elected 123rd player in the fifth round of the 1984 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros and began his minor league career in 1985 in the South Atlantic League with the Asheville Tourists. In 1988 he was first used for two games in the top junior class at the Tucson Toros . Walters got more AAA playing time with the Las Vegas Stars in 1990 after being traded from the Astros to the Padres, and ended the season with 53 appearances, a batting average of 25.5% and three home runs . After further constant service times with the Stars 1991, Walters was appointed to the MLB team of the San Diego Padres for the first time in May of that year .

Walter made his MLB debut on June 1, 1992 when the Padres played away against the Chicago Cubs . In the 1992 season he was used 57 times, in the following season in 1993 27 times. On November 22, 1993, Walters was released by the Padres in the free agent status and subsequently found no more MLB team with which he could get working hours. In the years 1994 to 1996 Walters was still active at the minor league level, including in Colorado.

After the active career

After retiring from his active career, Walters stayed in San Diego and became an officer in the San Diego Police Department. On November 12, 2003, Walters came to the aid of a colleague who was inspecting a car that was blocking traffic. He tried to overpower the armed driver of the car who was chasing his wife and children around town. The 24-year-old perpetrator was able to repel the attack and shot Walters in the neck. The driver of an uninvolved vehicle did not see the injured officer and ran him over. Meanwhile, the perpetrator was killed by a colleague of Walters. Walters himself survived the incident but suffered from tetraplegia from then on .

Dan Walters died on April 23, 2020. His death is directly related to injuries sustained more than 16 years earlier.
