Life

After receiving the AB summa cum laude in 1911 and the Ph.D. Having completed a degree in Classics at Harvard University , Phoutrides taught Greek and Latin at his alma mater until 1917 and then again in 1921, but went to Yale University in the same year, where he taught until his untimely death in 1923. Immediately after his studies he founded one of the first Greek student organizations in the USA called Helikon , which existed from 1911 to 1918. Phoutrides also advised the Icarian Brotherhood on building a secondary school on his home island.

His wife was Margaret Garrison Phoutrides.

Phoutrides was personally friends with the Greek poet Kostis Palamas , who introduced him, a representative of the purist Katharevousa , to the Greek vernacular ( Dimotiki ). He translated Palamas' poems into English. Phoutrides was also the first philologist in the United States to make significant contributions to modern Greek literary studies. He also published his own poems and, together with Francis Farquhar, an illustrated book about Olympus .
