history

The land was given by the Massachusetts Bay Colony as a grant to Captain William Raymond and his men in 1767 in gratitude for their service at the Battle of Québec under Sir William Phips . Until the founding of the town of Casco on March 18, 1841, it belonged to the town of Raymond.

The surface is hard and uneven, not particularly suitable as arable land. There are several lakes in Casco whose drains have been good locations for watermills. There were four sawmills, four grist mills, four clapboard factories, a wagon factory, and a tannery in Casco. In 1832 the Cumberland and Oxford Canal was built, connecting Casco with Portland . Steamships carried tourists and cargo from 1840 onwards.
