history

GDR fencing championships in 1989

After the Second World War , sport fencing was initially banned by the Allied Control Council as a "paramilitary exercise". It was not until 1949 that the German Fencing Association was able to re-establish itself in West Germany , before the fencing ban was officially lifted. In East Germany, the fencing section of the state committee for physical culture and sport was not constituted until June 15, 1951 . At the end of the year there were already 47 fencing departments, most of which were affiliated as sections of a company sports community. 1952 GDR fencing championships were held for the first time.

In 1957, the German Gymnastics and Sports Association became the new umbrella organization for GDR sports and on 19/20. In July 1958 the German Fechtverband was founded in Leipzig, replacing the fencing section . In 1957, the fencing section became a member of the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime .

In 1958 the DFV represented 3800 fencers. The number had grown to 4,200 by 1961 and, according to the Federal Archives, reached 7789 members in 1984. In 1990 its membership was only 4426 in 77 sections. The GDR fencers were particularly successful in foil. After the men's foil team around Klaus Haertter 1980 narrowly missed in Moscow as a fourth-place podium, winning Mandy Niklaus 1982 as third at the world championships in Rome, the first medal at a major international competition. 1988 won Udo Wagner Olympic silver in Seoul, already in 1983 and 1986 the men's foil team won silver and bronze at the World Championships.

On May 26, 1990, the Association Day of the DFV finally decided to dissolve it on December 31, 1990. After the end of the GDR, many East German fencing coaches worked in Western clubs.

President

The fencing section was administered by several full-time secretaries, some of whom were also assigned to several sections at the same time. The later presidents of the DFV mainly had a representative function; important decisions were made by the general secretary in coordination with the DTSB.
