The Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell (short: Tsongas Center ) is a multipurpose hall in the city of Lowell , Massachusetts . The University of Massachusetts Lowell ice hockey team , UMass-Lowell River Hawks, plays in the arena . From 1998 to 2010 it was also the venue for the home games of the Lowell Devils (formerly Lowell Lock Monsters ) from the AHL . The event arena is named after the Lowell-born politician Paul E. Tsongas (1941–1997), who was a Senator from Massachusetts from 1979 to 1985 .

history

The arena was built with funding from the city and university, which provided $ 4 million. Another US $ 20 million was taken over by the State of Massachusetts , primarily to support the university. In February 2010, the university took over the arena for the symbolic sum of one US dollar. As a result, the Tsongas Arena was renamed the Paul E. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.

The Tsongas Center was the home of the Lowell Devils from the American Hockey League from 1998 to 2010 . Right from the start, it has served the UMass-Lowell River Hawks' university ice hockey team as a venue for their games.

Numerous other events such as music concerts and graduation ceremonies for numerous high schools from the region take place in the arena . There are also other public events. The boxing scenes in the film The Fighter , which is about ex-boxing world champion Micky Ward, who was born in Lowell, and his brother Dicky Eklund , were shot in the event hall.
