Fiske Kimball

Fiske Sidney Kimball (born December 8, 1888 in Newton (Massachusetts) , † August 14, 1955 in Munich ) was an American architect, architectural historian and museum director.

Life

Kimball graduated from Harvard University with a Masters Degree in Architecture. He then taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Michigan , where he received his doctorate in 1915. In 1919 he was appointed director of arts and architecture at the University of Virginia . In 1923 he built the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University . In 1925 he was appointed director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art , a position he held until January 1955. Since 1943 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society .

Kimball was a senior monument conservationist and an advocate of the classicist tradition of the United States. He played a leading role in the restoration of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello country house and Stratford Hall Plantation in Virginia . Kimball's own home, Shack Mountain, is near Monticello. Kimball campaigned successfully for John Russell Pope's classicist design in the dispute over the Jefferson Memorial .

Kimball's wife Marie Goebel Kimball (1889–1955) wrote a three-volume biography of Jefferson.
