The 657 kilometer long Condamine River is part of the Murray-Darling Basin and a headwaters of the Darling River . It rises in the southwest of Mount Superbus , the highest point in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland and thus drains the inland side of the Great Dividing Range .

course

Of all the sources of the Darling River, that of the Condamine River is the furthest from its mouth, making it the longest river. Although its source is only 100 kilometers inland from the Queensland coast, the Condamine River flows first in a north-westerly direction through the Darling Downs area , then further west. Until the mouth in the Indian Ocean has the best water to cover a distance of 3672 kilometers.

The river passes the towns of Killarney and Warwick . Its tributary Gowrie Creek has its catchment area around Toowoomba .

Between Condamine and Surat , the name of the river changes to Balonne River . At Surat the river turns to the southwest and passes St. George and Dirranbandi in the further course .

Water management

The water from the Condamine River is used for both drinking water and irrigation . The Lesliedamm on Sandy Creek, a tributary of the Condamine, is the drinking water reservoir for the city of Warwick. The small Talgai weir near Clifton stores up to 640 million liters of water. During periods of drought, the Condamine dries up to such an extent that a series of ponds form in the river bed.

history

The Condamine River was named after Allan Cunningham in 1827 . He named the river after T. De La Condamine, the adjutant to then Governor Ralph Darling . Patrick Leslie was the first settler in the region and founded Canning Downs near Warwick in 1840.

In 1847 the entire course of the river was examined by Ludwig Leichhardt .

The Condamine River overflowed its banks during the 2010/2011 Queensland floods . In the town of the same name, Condamine , the highest water level ever recorded was reached at 14.25 meters. Numerous cities were flooded and had to be evacuated.

In May 2012, Jeremy Buckingham , Green MP for the House of Lords in neighboring New South Wales , reported on methane leakage on a five-kilometer stretch about a kilometer from a Coal Bed Methane mine , to show that it was also being planned in his state Conveyor technology is not safe, contaminates the water and releases methane, which is highly harmful to the climate, into the environment. According to investigations by the company operating the wells, there are various possible human and environmental factors as to why this gas leak occurs. However, there would be no danger to local residents or the environment. In February, a researcher from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) noticed that gas leaks were multiplying. In April 2016, Buckingham set fire to the gas leaking from a boat.
