from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralph Franz Hirschmann (born May 6, 1922 in Fürth , † June 20, 2009 in Lansdale , Pennsylvania ) was an American chemist .

life and work

Ralph F. Hirschmann was born as the son of Carl and Alice Hirschmann, b. Büchenbacher born. In 1937 they fled Germany to the USA, where he did his bachelor's degree at Oberlin College in 1943 . From 1943 to 1946 he served in the armed forces of the United States of America . He then did his Master's (1948) and his doctorate (1950) with William S. Johnson at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with the work A new synthesis of the 6-methoxy-17-equilenones: some related stereochemical considerations, synthesis of 5- substituted-1-methyl-2-vinyl-1-cyclohexenes . He then moved to Merck & Co., Inc. as a pharmaceutical researcher , where he soon became a leading head in protein and peptide mimetic research and was able to develop many drugs with his group, including Mevacor , Proscar , Primaxin and Ivermectin . In 1987 he became a research professor at the University of Pennsylvania . He was also a full professor at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1987 to 1999 . Since 1994 he has been Makineni Professor of Bioorganic Chemistry in Pennsylvania. In 2006 he retired .

Hirschmann married Lucy Marguerite Aliminosa on March 9, 1951, with whom he had two children: Ralph F. Hirschmann and Carla M. Hirschmann Hummel.

Hirschmann died on June 20, 2009 at the age of 87 in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA.

In his honor, the American Chemical Society has presented the Ralph F. Hirschmann Award in Peptide Chemistry annually since 1990 for outstanding contributions in the field of peptide chemistry . It is funded by Merck's research division ( MSD Sharp & Dohme ) and is endowed with US $ 5,000.
