Rædwulf
Rædwulf (also Raedwulf, Redulf ) was king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria for a short time in 844 or 858 .
Life
Nothing is known about his ancestry, but it is possible that he is a relative of Osberht and Ælle , who were to become king after him.
The timing of his reign is not entirely clear. Older research suggested 844, but more recent research by Kirby and Rollason points to 858.
Rædwulf was crowned king after Æthelred II , the son of Eanred , had been deposed. There are coins found that testify to his rule, but apart from the report in the Flores Historiarum , which tells that he fell in battles against Vikings at Alutthelia (Elvet near Durham ) that same year , nothing is known about him. After Rædwulf's brief reign, Æthelred was reinstated on the throne.
The stycas (silver coins with a very low fineness) minted by Rædwulf were of such poor material quality that they can be called brass currency . Despite his short reign, over 80 of his stycas have been preserved.
