Anna Louise Strong
Anna Louise Strong (born November 24, 1885 in Friend , Nebraska ; died March 29, 1970 in Beijing ) was an American journalist and author who mainly covered the Soviet Union and the Republic of China as well as the People's Republic of China .
biography
Anna Louise Strong studied at Bryn Mawr College , Oberlin College and received a doctorate from the University of Chicago at the age of 23 . She gave lectures for a government organization of child welfare and traveled around the USA. In May 1914 it had an audience of over 6,000 daily in Seattle and 40,000 on May 31st. She returned to Seattle when she was 30 and lived with her father. She became a socialist and organized summer camps.
In 1916, Anna Louise Strong ran for the Seattle Schools Inspectorate, with the support of women's and union groups. She was the only woman on the panel and stated that public schools should provide social services to children from poor families.
That same year the Everett massacre took place. On November 5th, on “Bloody Sunday”, at least five striking workers of the Industrial Workers of the World were killed and 27 injured. Anna Louise Strong worked as a freelance correspondent for the New York Evening Post . At first she saw herself as an uninvolved observer, but soon she sided with the workers.
Anna Louise Strong was a pacifist , and when the US entered World War I in 1917, she spoke out against conscription and supported IWW activists who were arrested, including a typist who sent out pamphlets calling for conscientious objection.
Anna Louise Strong was described as "unpatriotic" and removed from her post with the school inspectorate. She now worked openly for left-wing newspapers.
In 1921 Anna Louise Strong traveled to Poland and Russia on behalf of the Quaker organization American Friends Service Committee , where she met Mikhail M. Borodin and traveled to Central Asia with a group of Soviet communists . A year later she reported for the International News Service . In the late 1920s, Anna Louise Strong traveled to China and met Song Qingling , Eugene Chen (Chén Yǒurén 陳友仁) and Zhou Enlai .
Upon her return to Moscow in 1930, she helped found Russia's first English-language newspaper, Moscow News , and worked with Herbert Marshall and Jack Chen . In the 1930s she married Joel Shubin and traveled to the USA, Spain and China. She has written for The Atlantic Monthly , Harper’s , The Nation and Asia . She later accompanied the Red Army on their advance through Poland .
Anna Louise Strong traveled to China for the sixth time in August 1946 and spent the following winter in Yan'an .
In mid-February 1949 Anna Louise Strong was arrested in Moscow and accused of espionage and expelled from Poland a week later. Stalin also had Sidney Rittenberg arrested in Beijing through Mikoyan . Rittenberg had been their interpreter in Yan'an. She returned to the United States and initially had difficulty getting a passport.
She moved to China, where she settled, and u. a. was the first American woman to visit Tibet . She wrote numerous other books and lived in Beijing until her death.
