Friend is a city in Saline County in Nebraska , United States. In the United States Census 2000 , the place had 1174 inhabitants. The place has the volunteer fire department Friend and a small police station with two patrol cars equipped with radar.
geography
The place is on US Highway 6 , about 20 km south of Interstate 80 , in the southeast of the county, about 65 km west-southwest of Lincoln .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has an area of 2.1 km², without any significant body of water. In the south-east of the city there is a country club with a nine-hole golf course, in the south there is a sports facility, Burley Park.
history
The city is named after Charles E. Friend, who came from Illinois and settled here and named his settlement Friendville . He ran a shop and a post office. In 1873 the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad built a train station and named the station Friend .
The National Greyhound Association was founded in this location in 1906 under its original name, the National Coursing Association .
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Friend lived in 1174 people. The population density was 566.6 people per km ². There were 516 housing units at an average of 249.0 per km². The Friends population was 98.64% White , 0.26% Black or African American , 0.34% Native American , 0% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0% said they were of other races , and 0.77% named two or more races. 0.85% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents Friends were distributed to 475 households out of which 29.1% had children under 18 years of age. 61.9% of households were married, 4.4% had a female head of the household without a husband and 31.2% did not form families. 29.1% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 16.4% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.92.
The population was divided into 24.8% minors, 4.6% 18- to 24-year-olds, 22.1% 25- to 44-year-olds, 21.6% 45- to 64-year-olds and 26.8% in old age of 65 years or more. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 women there were 89.0 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 88.7 men.
