Friend is a city in Saline County in Nebraska , United States. In the United States Census 2000 , the place had 1174 inhabitants. The place has the volunteer fire department Friend and a small police station with two patrol cars equipped with radar.

geography

The place is on US Highway 6 , about 20 km south of Interstate 80 , in the southeast of the county, about 65 km west-southwest of Lincoln .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has an area of ​​2.1 km², without any significant body of water. In the south-east of the city there is a country club with a nine-hole golf course, in the south there is a sports facility, Burley Park.

history

The city is named after Charles E. Friend, who came from Illinois and settled here and named his settlement Friendville . He ran a shop and a post office. In 1873 the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad built a train station and named the station Friend .

The National Greyhound Association was founded in this location in 1906 under its original name, the National Coursing Association .
