The Hessian Rescue Medal (front)

The Hessian Rescue Medal was founded on July 11, 1953 with the law on the state recognition of rescue acts by the Hessian state parliament. This made the Hessian Rescue Medal one of the first state awards ever to have been donated after the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2007 the Hessian state parliament repealed this law. The Hessian Prime Minister has nevertheless considered the special recognition of rescue acts to be still necessary and for this reason with the decree on the state recognition of rescue acts and moral courage of September 5, 2008, Law and Ordinance Gazette for the State of Hesse , Part I p. 919 the Hessian Rescue Medal and the Hessian Medal for Civil Courage are donated again.

Content of the decree

The Hessian Rescue Medal is state recognition that can be awarded to people who have rescued people from mortal danger at their own risk or who have averted significant threats to the general public. If the rescuer was not in danger or if their actions were unsuccessful, a public commendation is given. People who are entrusted with the protection of other lives for “professional” reasons are only granted this recognition if they have made significant efforts to go beyond their duties. The Hessian Prime Minister decides on the award of the medal or the public commendation at his own discretion. The rescuer receives a certificate with the handover of the rescue medal. The recognition is announced in the state gazette for the state of Hesse.

Appearance and material

The Hessian rescue medal is made of silver and has a diameter of 2.5 cm. On its front, the state coat of arms can be seen raised above the word "Hessen". The inscription "For rescue from danger" can be read on the back, surrounded by an oak wreath. The rescue medal, like its model from 1833, is worn on an orange-white-colored ribbon, which is lined with a narrow white border.
