David "Dave" Schumacher (born May 17, 1974 in Chicago ) is an American jazz musician ( baritone saxophone , composition , also tenor saxophone , bass clarinet ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Schumacher graduated from Michigan State University ; during this time he played with Charles Ruggiero and Mark Sullivan . In 1997 he obtained a Bachelor of Music in Composition / Music Theory. He then studied composition for two years with Bob Brookmeyer at the New England Conservatory of Music , where he obtained a Masters in Jazz Studies and Composition. He took lessons from George Russell , Jerry Bergonzi , Rodney Whitaker and Marcus Belgrave . He came to New York in the early 1980s and toured America and Europe with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra from 1983 to 1987 . In 1987 he performed with the Art Blakey Big Band in Japan at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival.

In the 1990s he worked mostly in the orchestra of Harry Connick, Jr. , next to Mel Tormé , with The Pratt Brothers Big Band and in the Jason Lindner Big Band; From 1999-2000 he toured with the TS Monk On Monk Ensemble, and in 2000 with the Tom Harrell Octet in Europe. He also played with Nicholas Payton 's Louis Armstrong Tribute Big Band , Joe Lovano 's 52nd Street Themes Nonet and in the bands of Jack McDuff , Eddie Gladden , Mel Lewis , Chico O'Farrill and Lin Halliday . In 1997 Schumacher recorded his debut album From Another Life , on which musicians such as Jason Lindner, Avishai Cohen , Steve Berrios , Steve Wilson , Gregory Tardy , Rob Bargad , Dwayne Burno , Billy Drummond and Russell Malone participated in changing line- ups . As an accompanist, he also worked with Scott Whitfield , Ben Wolfe and Billy Carrion . In the field of jazz he was involved in 39 recording sessions between 1981 and 2008. Schumacher is a member of the BMI Jazz Composers' Workshop led by Jim McNeely and Mike Abene and is co-leader of the Sound Assembly formation in New York City, with which he also plays his own compositions (album Edge of the Mind ).
