Rozanne Levine

Rozanne Levine (born October 19, 1945 in New York ; † June 18, 2013 ) was an American jazz and improvisation musician ( clarinet , composition) and photographer .

Live and act

Levine grew up in the Bronx and learned the clarinet and guitar as a teenager; she performed as a clarinetist with the school orchestra. She graduated from New York University College of Arts and Sciences (graduated in psychology in 1972). At the same time she took clarinet lessons from Perry Robinson . In the late 1970s she was clarinetist in William Parker's and Patricia Nicholson Parker 's Centering Music / Dance Ensembles . Since the early 1980s she has also been working with the Glass House Ensemble of the American saxophonist Mark Whitecage , whom she married. In 1975 their twins, Diana and Perry Levine Whitecage, were born. In 1993 she reactivated her collaboration with William Parker and became a member of his Improvisors Collective . At the same time she formed her group Christal Clarinets , which includes Perry Robinson, Anthony Braxton and Joe Fonda . She also played u. a. with Steve Swell , Jemeel Moondoc , Theo Jörgensmann and Gerry Hemingway . In the duo RoMarkable with Mark Whitcage she improvises on his sound sculptures. She composes for her ensemble Chakra Tuning and uses her own photographs as a starting point for collective improvisations .

In 1989 she received the Commission Grant From The Painted Bride Art Center for her musical and photographic work.
