Jazz Passengers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jazz Passengers are an American jazz group. They were founded in 1987 by saxophonist Roy Nathanson and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes .

The Jazz Passengers play Martin Kunzler According to "a fun, yet not superficial melange of jazz , blues , gospel . Latin and other ethnic musical styles. ”In the new combination, these different components appear in a“ new light ”and are ironicized. The band moves "between vaudeville entertainment and surrealist revue, between AACM rituals and Spike Jones -lamauk".

History of the band

The group grew out of a partnership that Nathanson and Fowlkes developed after playing together in John Lurie's band, The Lounge Lizards . Other permanent members of Jazz Passengers are vibraphone player Bill Ware , bass player Brad Jones and drummer EJ Rodriguez . A violinist is often included ( Rob Thomas , Jim Nolet or, most recently, Sam Bardfeld ). The group, which has toured internationally several times, used to include guitarists Marc Ribot and David Fiuczynski . Fowlkes is the main composer for the band.

Outstanding is her album In Love (1994, High Street Records, producer Hal Willner ) with vocal contributions from Deborah Harry , Jeff Buckley , Jimmy Scott , Bob Dorough and Mavis Staples . Deborah Harry later became a permanent member of the group and appeared on a number of follow-up albums, including Individually Twisted (which also features two duets with Elvis Costello ).

Recently, the Jazz Passengers have rarely made recordings with full casts, although they have been quite active with partial casts.

In 2005 Nathanson composed a work that is reminiscent of the oldest object in the world, a zirconium crystal found in Australia that is over four billion years old . This composition was performed by Jazz Passengers in the same year at the Rock Concert: A Celebration of Deep Time in Madison , Wisconsin .
