Roy Nathanson (2007)

Roy Nathanson (* 1955 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician (saxophone, vocals, composition) and actor. He is the co-founder and main composer of Jazz Passengers .

Live and act

Nathanson first learned the clarinet as a child. During his studies he met trombonist Curtis Fowlkes for the first time while performing with the Big Apple Circus Band , with whom he has worked regularly ever since. Both belonged to John Lurie's band The Lounge Lizards between 1984 and 1989 . In 1987 they founded Jazz Passengers with other musicians from the downtown scene . Nathanson also worked with John Zorn , DK Dyson, Seigen Ono, Carol Emanuel and Anthony Coleman . In the 1990s he also worked with Charles Earland and David Cale. He also led his own quartet and wrote film music. He directed a saxophone quartet with Steve Lacy and Ned Rothenberg . He also belonged to Marc Ribot's Rootless Cosmopolitans and accompanied Susi Hyldgaard .

As an actor he appeared in films by Chantal Akerman , Jim Jarmusch and Elaine May , but also in downtown theater projects in New York. He has a central role in Peter Lilienthal 's children's film Wasserman - The Singing Dog . In 2009 he published his volume of poetry subway moon ( buddy's knife jazzedition ).
