Wildlife management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wildlife management is an area of nature conservation and hunting that focuses on wild animals and their habitats . Areas of activity include hunting and forestry , spatial planning , protected area management , landscape , species and nature conservation . The tasks of a wildlife manager are also the revitalization and conservation of habitats . Areas of wildlife management are, for example, beaver management and wolf management .

Aldo Leopold is often named as the founder of the idea of wildlife management .

Area of responsibility

Many disciplines intertwine in wildlife management. The main tasks of wildlife managers are the determination of population data, the preservation and research of habitats and the reintroduction of displaced or extinct species. Associated with this are forest-ecological, geological, political and economic topics (game biology and hunting economy ) as well as fish-biological / ecological and fishing-economic issues.

It is important to also understand economic and political relationships in order to have an overview of the complex area of wildlife management and to be able to plan the politically important steps. The reintroduction of wild animals is often accompanied by great skepticism and fear on the part of the inhabitants of a corresponding region. For the wildlife manager, this means that he needs psychological empathy in order to be able to develop the new habitat for animals. Organization of education for all affected people is important here.

Assessing the environment before relocating is very important. In the absence of essential elements that enable a species to survive, the project can fail. If the appropriate resources are available, it may be the task of the wildlife manager to adapt the environment accordingly or to organize the adaptation - to "manage".

Education

There is no globally uniform understanding of the specific area of responsibility and the transfer of this knowledge in university studies. So contains course Wildlife Management at the Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences also elements from the area of the zoo . Due to the many elements, the Wildlife Ecology and Wildlife Management course at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna is designed as an interdisciplinary course.

In z. B. South Africa and Namibia there are numerous training and study opportunities in the field of wildlife or game or game ranch management . In South Africa, among others, the University of Pretoria and the private Southern African Wildlife College offer such courses. In Namibia, wildlife management can be studied at the University of Namibia .

practice

The wildlife manager Peter Sürth launched the Alpine Expedition 2010–2012 project. In order to collect data and also to inform about a possible reintroduction of wolves , lynxes and bears in the alpine region , he has been involved since 2010, together with the biologist Gudrun Pflüger, to cross the entire alpine region in stages on foot or by bike. The cameraman Albert Ausosbsky will document the expedition with the camera. During this expedition there will be repeated informational events, also at schools. The expedition is financed by sponsors and also by Peter Sürth himself.

This expedition is certainly not typical. But it makes it clear how diverse the approach can be in order to achieve the goals that a wildlife manager pursues within his profession.
