Jim Nolet

James Michael Nolet (born December 11, 1961 in Dallas ) is an American violinist and violist of creative jazz who is considered one of the central figures of the New York Knitting Factory scene.

Life

Nolet had violin lessons from the age of seven and turned to improvisation just six years later . After a classical education in college he took lessons from Gary Peacock . He studied in Seattle at the Cornish Institute of the Arts, then at the New York Juilliard School of Music . During this time he played in classical chamber music ensembles, but also with musicians of the jazz avant-garde such as Ornette Coleman , Don Cherry , Cecil Taylor , Butch Morris and Hamiet Bluiett , but also with Hilton Ruiz , Joanne Brackeen , David Murray and Marc Ribot . Then he became a member of Jazz Passengers and worked with his own groups, for example in a trio with Glen Moore and Newman Taylor Baker or with Fred Hopkins and Sunny Murray . Tours have taken him through North America, Europe and Japan. In 1993 he presented himself on his debut album in different line-ups from duo to large ensemble. His New York String Improviser's Orchestra also worked with John Zorn . He also worked with Don Byron , John Purcell , John Hicks and Tim Hagans . He lives temporarily in Brazil, where he founded the band Arco Voz , which he presented in the United States in 2002.

In 1987 he was one of the co-founders of the Composer's Improviser's Workshop with Bern Nix ; in this context he also teaches. He also composes for film and theater.
