In Order to Survive: Live / Shapeshifter is a jazz album by William Parker and his band with Rob Brown , Cooper-Moore and Hamid Drake . The recordings were made on July 14, 2017 in the ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn and were released on July 5, 2019 by AUM Fidelity .

background

William Parker founded In Order to Survive , his first combo group, in 1993 . In addition to the drum chair, which Denis Charles and Susie Ibarra held alternately before Hamid Drake took over in the 21st century, the saxophonist Rob Brown was one of the members, as well as the pianist Cooper-Moore . The group released three critically acclaimed albums in the 1990s, including the studio album Compassion Seizes Bed-Stuy (1996) and the live albums The Peach Orchard (1998) and Posium Pendasem (1999) before pausing until 2012, when they performed again at the Vision Festival . In October 2016 they re-entered a studio for the first time since 1995, and half of the double set Meditation / Resurrection released in 2017 was created . Then two nights were booked at the ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn to perform live. Live / Shapeshifter presents all of the music from the second night.

On this double album, William Parker plays together with Rob Brown on alto saxophone, Cooper-Moore on piano and Hamid Drake on drums.

reception

Don Phipps gave the album in All About Jazz the highest score of five stars and said that William Parker used the immense talents of his group In Order to Survive , which is made up of long-time employees, to a statement about the dynamics of free run in the game close. Live / Shapeshifter is "full of energy - like wildfire through a dry forest"; this makes the music of William Parker unforgettable. Parker has carved his own grand piano into the jazz pantheon through his innovations and thoughtful creations, a grand piano in which this album will hang high.

Sammy Stein wrote on the Free Jazz Blog that the first CD was notable not only for the beauty of the music, but also for the inherent communication between the members of IOTS that was palpable, if not surprising, given the caliber of the people and the longevity of their association be. This is an entertaining album; almost every jazz reference, from swing to bop, is represented here, with some very controlled main works that are well positioned next to freely improvised and individualized sections. “That's what makes it so good - it's the feeling that every musician forms their own part, but they come together to create this cohesion, the unity that is good music,” praised Stein. “An album full of miracles in every way. Wonderful."

Peter Margasak only awarded 3½ stars in Down Beat and said that in Parker's five-part suite Eternal Is the Voice of Love , which alternates between heavy grooves and ecstatic supernovas of emotions, the relationship and intuition of Parker and Drake enable them to become one transforming a single organism with four limbs, constantly realigning the rhythm and changing the tempo. The muscles and the safety of their fluid fittings require quick silver reactions from the other players. Margasak particularly emphasizes the "Newark" dedicated to the trombonist Grachan Moncur III. Parker believes in the transformative power of this music, Margasak sums up, but for the listener there are times when the relentless drive is more numbing than it is heightening.

John Fordham, who gave the album four stars in the Guardian , points out in his review that Parker was influenced by the unique pianist Cecil Taylor (his former boss), Sun Ra and the "conductor" innovator Butch Morris and by the jazz tradition , drew from the cultural roots of Africa, America and European free jazz. "This is music from the rebellious sensibility of the Afro-American jazz avant-garde of the 1960s - but it's inviting, contemporary and always welcome."

Thom Jurek wrote in Allmusic that “In Order to Survive” on the second CD was the band's masterpiece; it is played with fervor and joy. The members of the quartet took turns, leading and following with angular interruptions that were consistently surprising. Live / Shapeshifter is not only a welcome addition to the previous recordings of In Order to Survive , “but also a powerful document that reveals the intimate knowledge of these players among one another. You don't have to listen too closely to answer the conversation or to delve into it - respect, acumen and emotion can do it. "
