Grundartangi is a place in Iceland .
It is located on the north bank of Hvalfjörður east of Hvalfjarðargöng . Administratively it belongs to the municipality of Hvalfjarðarsveit . There has been a ferrosilicon plant here since 1979, and an aluminum plant went into operation in 1998 . Both plants use electrical energy, which is very cheap here. The raw materials are delivered to its own seaport, through which the finished products also leave the country.
The factories cause very high pollutant emissions, especially fluoride, which is why no new residential developments are allowed to be built in a larger area around Grundartangi. Only holiday homes for temporary use may be built there.
