Aleris International, Inc. is a global aluminum production company . It focuses on the production of aluminum in rolled form as well as the production of aluminum alloys .

history

The company was formed in 2004 through the merger of Commonwealth Industries, Inc. and IMCO Recycling Inc. In the following years, Aleris was strategically expanded and in 2006 took over the aluminum division of the British Corus Group . The mills for the production of rolled products and pressed products were taken over for a purchase price of 570 million pounds .

In December 2006, the American Texas Pacific Group acquired Aleris for around 1.7 billion US dollars, including a prepayment for the repayment of debts amounting to 1.6 billion US dollars. Aleris: In 2007 the Aleris zinc business was sold in order to focus the company's activities on the production of aluminum.

On 12 February 2009, Aleris reported bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code with the aim to restructure the heavily indebted companies and privately to continue. The insolvency proceedings were successfully concluded in mid-2010.

In 2015, the aluminum extrusion business was sold to the Japanese Sankyo Tateyama .

In August 2016, the Chinese company Zhongwang announced that it would take over Aleris. However, in late 2017, these plans were dropped.

In 2018, Novelis announced that it would take over Aleris. After approval by the EU authorities, the completion of the takeover is announced for January 2020. The acquisition by Novelis was completed in April 2020
