Clayton is a city in Gloucester County and is located in the state of New Jersey in the United States .

geography

The city is located about 30 kilometers south of Philadelphia ( Pennsylvania ) and at the state road New Jersey State Route 55 .

history

Jacob Fisler bought much of what is now Clayton in 1850 and named it "Fislertown". After he opened a factory for the manufacture of glass there, the city grew steadily. Together with some neighboring communities, the "Clayton Township" was founded in 1858. In 1887 the city was named Clayton by the New Jersey State Legislature . The population at that time consisted of approx. 1500 inhabitants.
