The Metter is a 28.2 km long river in central Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the lowest Enz from the left and west in Bietigheim in the Ludwigsburg district .

Sources and history

The Mettertal is next to those of Kirbach in the north and Schmie in the south, the middle of the three large valleys that divide the Stromberg .

The Metter is being built in the western Stromberg north of the Diefenbach district of the municipality of Sternenfels in the Enzkreis . Its source branch, which is about 1.1 km long, also has the at about 395  m above sea level. NN highest source and rises almost 2 km northeast of the town center on the boundary to Zaberfeld -Leonbronn in the district of Heilbronn , this left source branch is labeled on maps with Metter and initially flows west. A second branch of the spring, which is 0.9 km long, rises a little over 2 km north-northeast of the village center and east of the Altkellerkopf at about 388  m above sea level. NN and runs south-southwest to the union with the name bearer at 320  m above sea level. NN in the wood meadows , shortly before which both streams leave the razor forest of their origins. The combined water runs in the direction of the shorter source stream to the south-south-west, before it touches the outskirts of Diefenbach in its north-east, a less than a hundred meters long tributary from a source runs from the south-west foot of the Rohrberg vineyard slope , the third, possibly attributable to the Metter is, at only 314  m above sea level. NN located.

The Metter now flows in a southerly direction through the open corridor around Diefenbach along the eastern edge of the village and behind it takes its first major tributary from the right and north, the Gießbach . After that it soon turns to the southeast and runs between again wooded slopes. On the right slope, a section of the Mannheim – Stuttgart high-speed line accompanies the stream that passes the Mettenbacher Mühle here. At the end of this section, coming from Maulbronn - Zaisersweiher , the L 1131 enters the valley, which then accompanies the Metter to Sersheim. The Zaisersweiher Bach also flows from this village to the right, and at the same time the Metter crosses over to the Schützinger district of Illingen . Here the landscape changes, the Metter now flows in the direction of the tributary through a wide valley on both sides to the east-southeast. It crosses the village of Schützingen . The downstream Gündelbach on the left bank is already a district of Vaihingen an der Enz in the Ludwigsburg district . The district boundary follows the Streitenbach , which tapers from the left just before the village , with a length of 7.5 km it is its second longest tributary. Behind the village, in the middle of which the shorter Gündelbach flows from the same side, the valley and the Metter slowly turn to the south-east and pass through the Horrheim district , shortly thereafter the municipality and village of Sersheim , where the Metter has now left the low mountain range of the Stromberg and into shallow Neckar basin has entered.

In Sersheim, which is mainly on the left bank, the river turns east and then crosses a long forest area for more than a kilometer across the valley and the accompanying peripheral plains, the corridor here contracts to a narrow accompanying strip of floodplains in which the Talstraße continues as L 1125. A first settlement of Sachsenheim extends to the downward end of the forest in the upper corner of the mouth of the Kirbach, which flows from the left. This largest tributary of the Metter comes very close to its course above this confluence, both in length and in catchment area, and has its source not far from the Metter itself in the western Stromberg . The body of water, which can now be called a river, divides the settlement area of Sachsenheim on its bank into a northern district of Klein- and a larger Großsachsenheim on the right bank and soon crosses over to the boundary of the largest ever touched town of Bietigheim-Bissingen behind the last houses . Here the Metter flows in the south along the village of Metterzimmer , which is bordered in the east by the Altenbach , which tapers to the left , with a length of 5.6 km the third largest tributary, on whose opposite bank the district of Bietigheim begins. There the Metter finally flows into the lower reaches of the Neckar tributary Enz shortly before the Enz bridge of the B 27 from the left and east and after a 28.2 km long run .

Catchment area

The Metter has a catchment area of almost 133 km². It stretches the longest about 23 km south-southeast from the north-western edge of the Diefenbacher Flur towards the forest area around the Kupferhaldenkopf in the westernmost Stromberg to the confluence in Bietigheim-Bissingen. Across from this, it remains less than 8 km wide everywhere. The valleys of the Metter and their large lower tributary Kirbach run on the upper and middle reaches through the low mountain range of the Stromberg and drain a large part of it in the east-southeast direction to the lowest Enz . The lower reaches from Sersheim (Metter) and Hohenhaslach (Kirbach), on the other hand, already belong to the Neckar basin.

Almost all of the larger peaks in the catchment area are reached on its northern edge in the main chain of the Stromberg on the left side of the Kirbach overflow, here the terrain, with the exception of the extreme west, rises almost entirely over 390  m above sea level. NN on. The highest points are here on the Häfnerhaslacher Schlierkopf ( 449.6  m above sea level ) and on the Scheiterhäule ( 472  m above sea level ) north of Ochsenbach . The edge heights in the west and south of the catchment area, however, are mostly below 350  m above sea level. NN , on the highest donkey mountain among them at the east end of the (southern!) Great Fleckenwald west of Horrheim they reach 392.4  m above sea level. NN . The highest mountain in the catchment area is 472.6  m above sea level. NN the Baiselsberg , which is centrally located between Kirbach and Metter valleys , and the small surrounding plateau on the eastern edge of the (northern!) Great Fleckenwald is mostly over 400  m above sea level. NN .

To the north of the Stromberg main chain, the Zaber , which drains east to the Neckar , competes with the Steinbach , which continues to the east of the chain that breaks off , and which also strives to the east, but to the lowest Enz and reaches it in Besigheim . On the rather narrow east side of the catchment area, there are no significant tributaries to the Enz , which has long been a direct competitor in its southeast. In the south-west, beyond the southern watershed, lies the left Enz tributary Schmie (mouth in Vaihingen an der Enz ). While in the north, east and south the competing waters all initially lead to the Neckar, on the other side of the western watershed there are catchment areas of other Rhine tributaries. On the other side of the major part of this section, its second-order tributaries, the Salzach and then the Weißach , which unite in Bretten to form the Saalbach . The Kraichbach rises beyond a fairly short section in the northwest .

Tributaries

The most important tributary of the Metter is the Kirbach, which flows from the left in Sachsenheim am Unterlauf . The Metter -Oberlauf km² a length of 21.831 km and a catchment area of 66.497 at this confluence, while the Kirbach drained km² with its 20.154 km run more 50.811.
