geography

course

The brook arises about 2.5 km west-northwest of Freudental and about 100 m southeast of the Pfeifferhütte on the wooded Großer Saukopf at an altitude of 384  m above sea level. NHN . Flowing first of all in a south-easterly direction, the Steinbach soon reaches the border with the Neckar basin and, after a stretch of about 2.5 km, the western outskirts of Freudental.

After crossing the village past the Grävenitz Castle with its three park ponds, which together measure around 0.7 hectares, the brook turns more eastward and after another 2.6 km, accompanied by a tree gallery, reaches the outskirts of Löchgau .

In Löchgau the brook runs around 500 m underground in a canal under and along Besigheimer Straße. To the east of Löchgau, the brook flows in a valley with vineyards on the sun-exposed left slope towards Besigheim . After entering the settlement area, the stream disappears in a canal, crosses under the Stuttgart-Würzburg railway line and only comes back to light shortly before it flows into the Enz. The mouth is a little below the bridge of the main road from the old town on the other side of the river over at a height of about 174  m above sea level. NHN . With a height difference of 210 m, the mean bed slope is about 22 ‰.

The Steinbach has only short or inconsistent tributaries. Even his own upper reaches often run dry for the first half kilometer.

The upper reaches of Steinbach is a fine material rich, calcareous means mountain of Keuper ( river type 6_K), from the eastern outskirts of Lochgau a coarse substrate rich, calcareous means mountain stream (river type 7).

Catchment area

The catchment area, which extends as the crow flies from the Pfeifferhütte east-southeast to the mouth, is just over two kilometers wide and 11.6 km² in size. In the upper area, roughly up to the tree line in front of Freudental, it is naturally in the easternmost Stromberg , the remaining part in the lower area of the Metterplatte of the adjoining Neckar basin .

Beyond the watershed left the running of the quite close competes Baumbach for Neckar in Walheim shortly after Zumündung der Enz Behind the other watershed is the larger drainage area of. Metter ; More direct competitors are their left tributaries Kirbach in the area of the Steinbach upper reaches and Altenbach on its middle reaches. The ridge opposite these competitors rises in the Stromberg up to a little over 435  m above sea level. NHN on the Hohe Reute is higher than that on the northern catchment area border to Baumbach.

Protected areas

Down to the settlement boundary of Löchgau, the catchment area mainly belongs to the nature reserve foothills of the Stromberg around Bönnigheim, Erligheim, Freudental, Löchgau and Kleinsachsenheim . It is located in the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park as far as below Freudental . The 2.4 km² water protection area Ochsenweide, Aufwiesen begins at the upper end of the upper Steinbach Valley and ends on the outskirts of Freudental .
