The watercourse called Seeländlesbach in the upper reaches initially flows in a south-westerly direction. After a stretch of flow of about 2 km, the stream turns in the urban area of Sachsenheim to the southeast. The longest part of its course is in the area of the city of Bietigheim-Bissingen . After a total of 5.6 km, the Altenbach between Metterzimmer and Bietigheim is tired at 186  m above sea level. NHN in the Metter. With a height difference of 77 m, the mean bed slope is 13.8 ‰.

Catchment area

The Altenbach drains around 5.8 km² in the sub-areas of Metterplatte and the southern Stromberg foreland of the natural area of the Neckar Basin southwest to southeast to the Metter . The upper reaches of the Seeländlesbach run in a ditch that also runs north to the Steinbach , in the end probably thrown under a glider flying site near Löchgau.

Behind the boundaries of the catchment area, roughly in the shape of a crescent open to the east, the aforementioned Steinbach competes in the north. In the east there is no further continuous watercourse in front of the Enz , which is more than 4 km away , into which all competitors drain, but there is a dry valley in the upper area called Löchgau and in the lower Brachberger Tal towards the Enz; on this side of the catchment area lies the watershed at 292.7  m above sea level on the flat knoll between the Löchgauer Weißenhof and the Bietigheimer Waldhof . NHN highest point in the drainage area of the Altenbach. In the south the immediate catchment area of the river Metter borders, in the west that of the Metter tributary Kirbach and to the north that of its left tributary Schlankenbächle .

The bed of the Altenbach lies on most of the upper course in the clayey Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt Formation ), then it reaches the Upper Muschelkalk a little before the brief crossing on Sachsenheimer Grund , in which the lower course remains in the area from Bietigheim to the mouth. However, this layer is only present in the narrow valley basin, outside in the rest of the catchment area on the right is the Laufs mostly loess sediment , on the left mostly the Lettenkeuper, with some also overlying loess sediment islands.
