The largest body of water in Schützingen is the 24 km long Metter , which flows 4.1 km through Schützingen. The Streitenbach, a left tributary of the Metter, flows in the northeast of the district in a southeastern direction and forms the border to Gündelbach in the lower reaches.

history

Remnants of ramparts indicate a settlement in the Hallstatt period, as well as traces from Roman times. The Alemanni colonized the region in the 3rd century AD. The name Scuzingen comes from them. The Franks introduced Christianity around the year 600 . The place is mentioned for the first time in 1023 .

The Thirty Years War had depopulated all but one inhabitant of the village. Refugees from the little country above the Enns in Austria repopulated the village. The Second World War claimed 15 lives and caused considerable damage to buildings. The post-war period brought a steady economic upswing and brisk construction activity.

On January 1, 1974 Schützingen was incorporated into Illingen.

Attractions

The Gothic Protestant parish church of St. Ulrich was first mentioned in 1023. The choir of the original fortified church dates from before 1300; its walls and ceilings are decorated with paintings from around 1300. The east tower above the choir is also early Gothic. The remains of a Romanesque portal can be found on the west wall and a Renaissance archway at the west entrance . The church is enclosed by a high wall.

In the center of the old street village, small hooked courtyards and impressive half-timbered houses line up on Hauptstrasse and Illinger Strasse . The oldest, opposite the church, dates from 1558, the others from the 17th and 18th centuries.
