Dreadstone an allegedly 650 years old landmark west of the eponymous mountain in Stromberg called the denunciations of communities Ensingen , Gündelbach , Illingen and Schützingen demarcated and later the border between Württemberg and Baden marked.

geography

The boundary stone called Schreckstein stands 352 meters above sea level to the right of the Metter . The 383.2 meter high mountain Schreckstein is part of the ridge between Metter- and Glattbachtal dominated by the 392.4 meter high Eselsberg . In terms of forestry, it belongs to the Great Fleckenwald , which also includes the parcel that was once Sch [r] eckstein and later the Klosterwald in the Gündelbach district. Around 200 meters west of the Württemberg-Baden border, remains of the wall in the forest indicate a desert .

history

The questionable dating of the boundary stone is based on a document issued in 1355 by the declining Counts of Vaihingen , who had moved their seat to the nearby Eselsberg Castle : Count Konrad V. von Vaihingen and his son Heinrich sold Maulbronn Monastery on August 22, 1355 "Their forest, called the Scheckstein, near Gündelbach". There is no mention of a boundary stone in this document, but of a forest parcel, the name of which was certainly much older and referred to the nearby Schreckstein mountain. After it came into the hands of the monastery, it was called Klosterwald .

The first evidence of the boundary stone can only be found in an excerpt from the Ensingen land registry from 1757, in which it is named as a landmark of the Württemberg office of Vaihingen an der Enz Schreckstein . It also acted as a boundary stone for the Oberämter Vaihingen and Maulbronn established in 1758 , which were dissolved on September 16, 1938. The Vaihingen district was established at this time . Maulbronn was repealed.

In November 2003 the Schreckstein was overthrown, re-measured and re-set and inaugurated with a festival on Sunday, May 23, 2004.
