The Badischer Winzerkeller eG is an association of wine cooperatives with headquarters in Breisach near Freiburg in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

history

Wooden barrel cellar of the Badischer Winzerkeller

On March 3, 1952, the central winery Kaiserstühler Winzergenossenschaften eGmbH , based in Breisach, was founded as the first joint winery of Baden winegrowers' cooperatives. On April 26, 1954, the district winery was converted into a state headquarters for the entire Baden wine-growing region and was called the central winery of Badischer Winzergenossenschaften . On December 7th, 1988 the name was changed to Badischen Winzerkeller eG.

Company profile

In 2018, 51 cooperatives were affiliated with the Verbund, which produced a total of 21.8 million liters of wine (2017: 12.2 million liters) on a vineyard area of 1,694 hectares (2017: 1,706 hectares). In 2018, sales (liters of wine) increased by 11 percent compared to the previous year (2017: 15.85 million liters). The company is Baden's largest winery with a tank capacity of 105 million liters (more than half of which has been unused for years).

The catchment area extends from the Badische Bergstrasse in the north to Lake Constance in the south.

The cooperative association supplies 80 percent of its wines to discounters such as Aldi and Lidl as well as to food retailers such as Edeka and Rewe . The rest goes to the wine trade, the catering trade, abroad or directly to consumers.

After several poor harvests, Baden winegrowers, like the entire Baden wine-growing region, had the lowest cellar inventory in 30 years in 2014. Sales fell by 22.6 percent from 18.1 to 14 million liters, and sales by 12 percent from 45.8 to 40.3 million euros (compared to 2007: 52.3 million euros). Sales have increased again since 2015 and were most recently at 47.6 million euros. In 2016, the company paid the winegrowers 9,333 euros per hectare of acreage - an average figure in the Baden wine market. In 2017, the grape allowance increased by 4 percent per kilogram.

The number of employees was 147 full-time and 22 part-time employees in 2009 and fell to 130 full-time and 27 part-time employees by 2016. The number of employees has been around 200 since 2017.

The CEO is Peter Schuster (as of 2017).

The Badische Winzerkeller is a member of the Federal Association of Ecological Viticulture ( Ecovin ), the Baden Viticulture Association and the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative Association .
