history

The forerunner of the newspaper, the Offenburg intelligence and weekly paper , was founded in 1812 by the Innsbruck-based printer Andreas Patsch. In 1834 Patsch's stepson Joseph Otteni took over the paper and renamed it Der Ortenauer Bote in 1851 . In 1867 Otteni's son-in-law Johann Joseph Alexander Reiff became the owner of the newspaper and printing works. Since then, the publishing house has been owned by the Reiff family. The newspaper has had its current name, Offenburger Tageblatt, since 1913 .

In 1936 the Offenburger Zeitung was merged with the Offenburger Tageblatt , which continues to use this title - alongside its former name Ortenauer Bote - as a second subtitle. From December 1944 to October 1949 the newspaper could not appear for reasons related to the war.

In 1976 the Offenburger Tageblatt was the first German newspaper to purchase a photo typesetting system from Linotype for its editorial staff.
