The Colmar – Metzeral railway is a French railway that connects the cities of Colmar and Metzeral via Munster . The route had number 34 under the Réseau ferroviaire d'Alsace-Lorraine .

history

The Colmar - Munster section was put into operation on December 3, 1868, the extension to Metzeral on November 1, 1893. X 4750 (EAD) were still in use on the line until 2000 . Since then, type X 73500 railcars of the SNCF have been in service.

In Munster the Münsterschluchtbahn branched off up to the Col de la Schlucht . It opened in 1907, but was destroyed in the First World War in 1914 and never rebuilt.

Infrastructure

The line is single-track and not electrified. The “ Bloc Automatique à Permissivité Restreinte (BAPR)” is used on the Colmar – Munster section . The section from Munster to Metzeral is operated as a "Navette" (shuttle train). This means that there can only be one train on this section of the route. The maximum speed from Colmar to Turckheim is 70 km / h, from there to Munster 100 km / h and from Munster to Metzeral 60 km / h. There are 51 level crossings along the route .

modernization

In 2005, extensive renovation work took place on the line. The Munster Badischhof and Colmar-Mésanges stops were rebuilt as part of the construction project. The Saint-Gilles stop has been moved towards Colmar to be closer to the “Lycée agricole du Pflixbourg”. From Colmar to Munster, the " Block Manuel de Voie Unique (BMVU)" , which had existed since 1988, was replaced by the BAPR. The top speed from Turckheim to Munster was increased from 70 km / h to 100 km / h. In the further course of the route to Metzeral it was only possible to drive at 40 km / h until 2005, since then 60 km / h have been possible. The track plans of Turckheim and Munster have been simplified, and one track has been removed in Turkheim.

Train stations

There are 16 train stations and stops in operation. They are equipped with LED train destination indicators and guide strips for the blind . The only train stations that still have sidings are Metzeral, Munster and Turckheim. Some municipalities have several train stations on the route, such as Colmar (three), Wintzenheim (three), Turckheim (two) and Munster (two).

business

The route is used daily by up to 20 TER Alsace trains in each direction. Some trains already turn in Munster. X-73500 diesel multiple units are used in single or double traction. Diesel railcars of the type X-76500 have recently been used.
