Universal War One

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Universal War One is a French-Belgian science fiction - comic by Denis Bajram . The story, which is completed in six albums , can be assigned to the sub-genres Military Science Fiction and Hard Science Fiction , which means that the scientific basis of the story is primarily based on technical and scientific sub-areas. In particular, aspects of quantum mechanics are embedded, which is understandable to all.

content

The plot initially revolves around humanity in the year 2098, who, during the colonization of the solar system, hit a huge black “wall”, which prevents the further advance of spaceships to the planet Uranus . The members of a criminal squadron consisting of criminals investigate this phenomenon for the United Earth Forces and get caught in an unbelievable vortex of space and time. Past, present and future are connected with each other.

In the further course of the plot the rings of the planet Saturn are destroyed, the planet Uranus is split in two halves and the earth threatens the same fate. Billions of people lose their lives in the course of the plot. The question arises right up to the last page whether humanity will succeed in colonizing the universe or whether it will perish in its own solar system.

publication

Denis Bajram developed the first concept of the series for Delcourt , still under the title L'Arche , but it was never realized. The French publisher Soleil Productions published the six volumes from 1998 to 2006. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 surprised Bajram with the completion of the fourth album, which partly has a New York of the year 2098 as the setting. Nevertheless, he decided not to subsequently remove the towers of the World Trade Center that he depicted in some panels . The events, as well as the accusation made in an internet forum that the comic tends to be reactionary, blocked Bajram as an artist. He then worked as a computer programmer for a year and a half. Almost three years passed between the publication of Volumes 4 and 5.

The recently re-established Splitter Verlag published the series in Germany from 2006 to 2008. In 2010, as part of the Free Comic Day, it brought out the first volume again, but in full size and as a booklet.

In the USA, Universal War One was licensed by the major publisher Marvel . The comic was initially published in booklet form, similar to the free comic day edition. The series was divided into two "three-part mini-series" (although no break in the middle can be identified in terms of the plot): Universal War One 2008 and Universal War One: Revelations 2009. Both parts were also published in 2009 as a book.

continuation

In September 2013 the Belgian publisher Casterman published Le Temps du désert , the first volume of the six-volume follow-up series Universal War Two . Two months later this volume was also published in German, again on Splitter.

criticism

Klaus N. Frick , the editor-in-chief of the Perry Rhodan series of novels , was enthusiastic about the series, which only really convinced him in its entirety, both in terms of drawing and text. “It's impressive how Denis Bajram - responsible for the drawings and text - pushes the plot forward, how he pushes his main characters from one problem to the next and how he manages to develop their characters further and further without changing their core. "

On the other hand, Stefan Pannor sees the greatest weakness in the characters' depth of character. “ At no point do the main characters become plastic for the reader, their inner workings understandable. “Although the story is“ appropriately complex ”, the“ scientific background [...] accurate, concise and precise, understandable for the layperson ”, he does not care about the death of the characters who are only perceived as functional. In addition, he does not like the frame motif of the story, the fictional "Bible of Canaan", which in his opinion " outside of the narration [remains unclear, [gives] the work no additional level ". However, one has to admit that he only reviewed the first four volumes, Bajram himself says in the interview: “ In UW1 you can find out on the very last page what the Bible of Canaan is all about. This is not just superficial decoration to create mood, but the ultimate piece of the puzzle in history. "
