Casterman is a publisher specializing in comics and children's literature based in Tournai , Belgium .

description

Casterman, founded in 1780, was originally a printing and publishing house. In 1934 Casterman took over the publication of the comic series Tintin ( Les Aventures de Tintin ) from the magazine supplement Le Petit Vingtième from The Pharaoh's Cigars , the fourth album in the series. From 1942 Casterman published revised and colored versions of the earlier albums.

A little later, strengthened by the success of Hergé's comics , Casterman brought out new series by other authors such as Jacques Martin , François Craenhals or Carla and Vilhelm Hansen . Since 1954 Casterman has also published children's books, including the successful Martine books by Marcel Marlier (1930–2011).

In an effort to appeal to a more mature audience, Casterman decided in 1973 to publish the first albums in the Corto Maltese series by Italian author Hugo Pratt . In addition, from 1978 Casterman's monthly magazine (à suivre) appeared , which influenced the new upswing in comics in the 1990s. (à suivre) was discontinued in 1997.

Casterman is now part of the Flammarion publishing group .
