biography

François Craenhals was born in Evere in 1926 . He was a fan of the American comics by Alex Raymond and Hal Foster and created his first Tarzan- style comic book Karan in the late 1940s. At the same time, he created a medieval comic for the weekly magazine Le soir illustré , the main character of which was a knight.

When he introduced these comics to Tintin magazine, he was hired as the magazine's artistic director and gradually began drawing short comics for the magazine. His first major series made its debut in 1953: Pom et Teddy was a series about a boy, a girl and their donkey, the first stories of which were about a circus.

Craenhals soon became one of the main producers of comics for magazines and newspapers. Several employees joined his studio. He worked for the Petits Belges magazine published by Averbode Abbey and for many years published Primus et Musette in La Libre Belgique . Craenhals was one of the first comic artists to join Hergé at the Casterman publishing house , where his two most important series were published: the children's series Les 4 As (German Die Vier ) about four young people (three boys and one girl) and their crazy adventures, as well as the adult comic inspired by Prince Eisenherz Chevalier Ardent (German Roland, Ritter Ungestüm ) about a young knight at the time of King Arthur . Both series sold well, the latter also met with a positive response from criticism.

In the 1990s Craenhals moved to Rivières-de-Theyrargues in southern France , where he continued to work on his two series until his death in Montpellier in 2004 . The comic magazine COMIXENE praised Craenhals as "one of the really great Belgian comic authors, who at times was read a lot by us too ".
