die Vier (in the original "Les 4 As" , in German "Die 4 Asse" ) is a Franco-Belgian comic series by Georges Chaulet and François Craenhals , whichappeared for the first time in 1964 and is continued to this day. So far, 43 volumes of this series have been published, of whichonly 14 volumes were sold in Germany . The first ten albums were publishedby Carlsen Verlag between 1973 and 1982 ,andanother four albums were published by Schreiber & Leser in 1988 and 1989 . In addition to the creators Chaulet and Craenhals, Jacques Debruyne , Alain Maury and Sergio Salma also work on the series.
The drawing style of François Craenhals is based on the so-called Ligne claire , the "clear line", with its shadowless, sharply drawn people and landscapes.
Novels
At first, "the four" were a series of novels for young people that focused on the extraordinary experiences of three boys, a girl and their dog. Back then, Georges Chaulet (text) and François Craenhals ( illustrations ) were responsible for the realization . The novels were never published in Germany. In 1962, the two creatives proposed to Casterman- Verlag to convert the novel series into a comic series.
The German novel titles have been translated accordingly.

action
The actions of the albums cover the Adventure film - stereotypes of the past and present time from. There spies , sects , sea monsters and ghosts are up to mischief. Treasures have to be unearthed, unknown animal species discovered and new, groundbreaking technologies protected from misuse. The four friends travel to near and far countries, even to Mars , repel alien invaders and take part in breakneck competitions, such as a rally . All of the stories also contain funny situations that would do justice to the slapstick of the silent films of the 1920s.
The main characters
The story is about the fantastic, hair-raising adventures of a smart group of children who call themselves “the four” . The name is made up of the first letters of their first names:
- V alentin, called Tino: all-rounder, easily tinkers a motorcycle out of a sewing machine.
- I length, small "grande dame" of the gang: Modenärrin, decorator and cosmetics expert.
- E rwin, called Ergo: bookworm and brain worker, has a suitable quote ready for every situation.
- R olf, known as Rolli: weighty gourmet and master chef with a balanced disposition.
The gang also includes Oskar, a fox terrier with a black eye ring and a motorized red soap box named Torpedo .
The four main characters, apart from Oskar, have other names in the French-speaking world :
Name (german) | Name (french) |
---|---|
Valentine | Marco , called "Lastic" |
Inge | Dina |
Erwin , called "Ergo" | Théo , called "Doct" |
Rolf , called "Rolli" | Jean-Louis , called "Bouffi" (French for "bloated" ) |
The police officers Erbsl and Bohner are called "Brodequin et Lecardunoie" in the French original , whereby Brodequin means "laced boots" in German .
There is another version of the comics in which the characters have different names. There Valentin becomes Danny , Inge becomes Nina , Erwin becomes Carolus , and the opponents become Doctor Stirbligg and Captain Ogottsonkopp .
The minor characters
