Building history

Earlier organs

The oldest record of an organ in the Demmin town church comes from a repair from 1546. The city council donated a new organ in 1570, which was made by the organ builder Fabian. This was thoroughly repaired in 1602, but destroyed when the church was destroyed in 1676.

The Swedish food and mail inspector Martin Friedrich Bohse donated a new organ from the workshop of Zacharias Paul Müller in Wittstock in 1706, which was enlarged and expanded in 1722 by Joachim Trumpf from Ivenack. In 1742 Christian Gottlieb Richter from Stralsund carried out repairs and renovations , but these were poorly carried out. The organ, which had become unplayable, was made playable again in 1779 by Matthias Friese from Kummerow . The expert opinion of the master Johann Gottlieb Mehner from Stettin was negative. Friese tuned the organ again in 1784.

New building by Johann Simon and Carl August Buchholz 1817–1819

The Berlin organ builder Johann Simon Buchholz and his son Carl August Buchholz began building a new organ in 1817, which was appraised by the Szczecin organ builder Grüneberg . In 1819 the church received an organ with two manuals , a pedal , 40 sounding voices and 48 stops for 4150 thalers. This organ already had a range from C to g 3 in the manual and from C to g 1 in the pedal. The original pedal drawer and the Fernwerk drawer with modifications by Grüneberg are probably preserved from this organ . In 1820, the Buchholz workshop repaired defects and damage.

In 1840 the organ builder Johann Friedrich Schulze from Thuringia carried out repairs for 650 Taler , who made changes to the disposition . During the renovation work on the church in the years 1857 to 1867 under the direction of Friedrich August Stüler and the Demmin superintendent Lengerich, the organ choir was moved back into the tower and closed to the main nave with parapet masonry.

Renovation by Grüneberg in 1866/1867

In 1866 and 1867 it was rebuilt by the Szczecin organ builder Barnim Grüneberg , who reversed Schulze's changes. He expanded the organ to four manuals, 52 parts and 64 registers, taking over the number of pipes, and limited the number of manuals to the usual f 3 . The costs amounted to almost 6139 thalers. In 1912 he revised the organ again, making small changes.

In 1917 the prospect pipes and probably also the tin pipes of the substation had to be delivered for armament purposes. They were replaced by zinc pipes after the end of the war . In 1935, the W. Sauer Orgelbau company was redesigned . She made changes to the console and built in some neo-baroque registers.

Restoration and current use

The damage that occurred in the 20th century made extensive renovation of the organ necessary. At the end of the same year, the Demmin eV organ support association, founded in 1997, awarded the restoration contract to the organ building company Christian Scheffler from Sieversdorf near Frankfurt (Oder) . This carried out the necessary work between 1998 and 2003. The organ was traced back to Grüneberg's disposition.

First of all, four large wedge-shaped bellows were repaired and an adequately sized fan was installed. The upper work was then put back into operation and the labial registers revised. Finally, the prospect pipes were made from and installed, the reed registers reconstructed and the housing cleaned and preserved. Missing parts were rebuilt according to historical models. These were found mainly in the Barther Buchholz organ but also in the Grüneberg organs from Neustrelitz and Altentreptow .

On September 8, 2002 took place under the first Demminer Orgeltage at a festival service the organ dedication . The costs of the renovation amounted to around 300,000 euros, half of which was financed by public funds. The other half was covered by donations.

In addition to the church services, the Demminer Buchholz-Grüneberg organ is used regularly for concerts. One of the highlights is the annual Demmin Organ Days , which are organized by the Demmin Organ Funding Association.
