Alfred Wegwerth
Alfred Wegwerth (born May 1, 1897 in Königs Wusterhausen , † December 8, 1976 in Bremen ) was a German artist and politician ( NSDAP ).
Life
Wegwerth lived in Ilmenau in Thuringia , where he ran his own painting business from 1928. Even before the National Socialists came to power , he was a member of the NSDAP and between 1933 and 1945 a member of the city council in Ilmenau. In 1947 he emigrated to West Germany and settled in Kirchweyhe , where he ran a painting business.
Works
Some of the sgraffiti on the walls of buildings erected during the 1930s that have survived to this day come from Wegwerth . Wegwerth also created numerous paintings, including the mural “Bad Ilmenau Glassworks” in the city council chamber of Ilmenau. The fact that his works are still uncommented in public space triggered a public discussion between the Left Party.PDS and the CDU in the state parliament and city council in connection with Wegwerth's political views . The Left Party called on the city administration of Ilmenau and the Technical University of Ilmenau to comment on the works for the ignorant viewer, for example by placing information on the author and the political context of the creation of the pictures. The CDU saw no need for action in this case, since the pictures do not violate any applicable law and are covered by the freedom of art ( Basic Law , Article 5, Paragraph 3). Instead, she accused the Left Party of populism .
