Franz Howanietz

Franz Joseph Howanietz (born May 23, 1897 in Vienna ; † November 22, 1972 ibid) was an Austrian painter and restorer .

Life

From 1905 to 1907 Howanietz attended the Ahf painting and drawing school and from 1911 received training in restoration and conservation techniques. In the First World War Howanietz was severely wounded. After the war he worked as a painter and restorer. In 1933 he emigrated to Puerto Rico and taught art appreciation at the university there. During the Second World War Howanietz was interned by the Americans in 1941 and repatriated in 1944. From 1945 to 1951 Howanietz worked at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts as a lecturer at the Master School for Conservation and Technology. On the basis of a professorship he had been promised, but which he did not receive, he turned back to America and moved to New York in 1953 . Here he was employed as a restorer at the Samuel H. Kress Foundation . After that he was a freelance artist, but could not assert himself here either and returned to Austria in 1965.
