Hugues II. De Montfort
Hugues II. De Montfort († after 1088 in England) was a Norman nobleman. He was Seigneur de Montfort-sur-Risle and one of 15 proven companions of William the Conqueror ( proven companions ) during the Norman conquest of England .
Life
Hugues II was a son of Hugues I cum barba (the bearded) de Montfort, who was killed in 1045 in the fight against Vauquelin de Ferrers. In 1054 Hugues II appeared on the side of his liege lord, Duke Wilhelm of Normandy in the Battle of Mortemer , in which King Henry I of France was defeated.
In January 1066 he took part in the "Council of Lillebonne", which made the decision to invade England. Hugues agreed to provide 50 ships and 60 knights for the company. In return, Hugh was named Warden of Dover Castle in William 1067 and installed in the newly built fortress Winchester Castle , which was the seat of government of the Norman kings for more than 100 years. He also became Constable of England and received numerous estates in Essex , Kent , Norfolk and Suffolk . In 1088 he retired to a monastery.
family
Hugues married a daughter of Richard de Beaufour. From this marriage he had a daughter:
- Alice de Montfort; ∞ Gilbert de Gant, Lord of Folkingham ( House of Gent )
From his second marriage (nothing is known about the wife) he had three children:
- Robert I. de Montfort († before 1111), accused of treason in 1107
- Hugh III. de Montfort († before 1100)
- Adeline de Montfort; ∞ Guillaume; † 1104, Seigneur de Breteuil , Seigneur d ' Ivry , eldest son of William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford ( FitzOsbern ).
