House Fougères

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The house of Fougères was probably a branch of the house of Rennes , which split off at a time when the family came to rule in Brittany . Méen de Rennes is the first known lord of Fougères Castle and the town of Fougères , which then developed at the foot of the castle , who, with the ruling lords of Vitré to the south, secured the borders of Brittany against the county of Maine and thus the Kingdom of France, and thereby the mighty ones Lords of Mayenne and Laval faced each other (see also: House Vitré , House Mayenne and House Laval ).

The family first appeared at the beginning of the 11th century and existed for ten generations until the end of the 13th century. Members of the family took part in the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and received fiefs on the island, which resulted in some marital connections across the English Channel .

In 1307 Fougères was acquired by the French King Philip IV from the heirs of the last mistress.
