House Vitré

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The House of Vitré is a family of the Breton nobility who secured part of the eastern border of Brittany from Vitré from the beginning of the 11th to the middle of the 13th century . When the family died out, the property came to the Montmorency family through marriage .

The Breton Duke Geoffroi Béranger gave his vassal Rivallon at the beginning of the 11th century (Geoffroi died in 1008, so the enfeoffment must have been made before that) a fortification existing on a slate spur above the Vilaine , from which the road from Rennes to Laval and thus into the Fiefdom of the French king, in particular the county of Maine could be controlled. The fortification became a castle, a city and a powerful barony developed.

Pierre Le Baud († 1505) in his Histoire de Bretagne published in 1638 and Louis du Bois († 1855) in his Essai sur l'histoire de la ville et des seigneurs de Vitré mention a Martin de Rennes as the father of Rivallon and the younger son of Juhel Bérenger, Count von Rennes , thus brother of Duke Conan I , connecting the House of Vitré with the ducal family, but without presenting any evidence.

The family made numerous marriage alliances in the region on both sides of the border ( Machecoul and La Guerche-de-Bretagne on the one hand, Pouancé , Craon , Château-Gontier and Mayenne on the other), but also to England, but hardly to France. Nevertheless, it was a French family, the Montmorency, who inherited the Vitré house in the mid-12th century.
