Premonstratensian Abbey Mondaye

The Premonstratensian Abbey of Saint-Martin de Mondaye has been a French monastery of the Premonstratensians since 1202 , and the Trappist women from 1815 to 1845 , in Juaye-Mondaye, Calvados department , Diocese of Bayeux .

history

The Premonstratensian Monastery

The Abbey de La Lucerne founded the monastery Mons Dei (Gottesberg) in 1202 , later Mondaye , 12 kilometers south of Bayeux . The abbey existed until it was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1791. Resettled by the Belgian Abbey of Grimbergen in 1858 , it was dissolved again in 1880 and (after secretly resettled since 1894) in 1903 for a third time. The monks went to Belgium to the Bois-Seigneur-Isaac Abbey (in Braine-l'Alleud ), from where they were able to return to Mondaye in 1921, which has since re-established as a Premonstratensian monastery.

The Trappist Convent

The Trappist sisters of the Valenton Monastery , which emerged from the Grosbois (Yerres) monastery in 1808 and was dissolved in 1811, who had survived in Tréguier until 1815 thanks to the good relations of their superior Marie des Séraphins de Chateaubriand (1761–1832), a relative of François-René de Chateaubriand , then settled in the empty Mondaye monastery, but had to contend with many difficulties there, especially after the death of Superior Marie des Séraphins. A supplementary attempt at settlement in 1836 by the La Coudre monastery failed. The sisters were distributed to other monasteries. In 1837 La Coudre attempted a new settlement, but in 1845 this community also had to move to the newly founded Trappist convent La Cour-Pétral .
