The Fontaine-Daniel monastery (Fons Danielis) is a former Cistercian abbey in the Mayenne department , Pays de la Loire region in France . The monastery was located in the municipality of Saint-Georges-Buttavent in the hamlet of Fontaine-Daniel about 6 km southwest of Mayenne .

history

The monastery, which was initially founded in 1197 as the daughter of Clairmont Monastery from the Filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey in La Herperie near Bourg-Nouvel, was moved to Fontaine-Daniel in 1204. The monastery was founded by Juhel III, Baron von Mayenne . The monastery owned the forests of Salert and Poillé. It drained the valley of the Anvore. The church was consecrated in 1243. The monastery was affected by the Hundred Years War and looted by English troops in 1592. It came to an end during the French Revolution in 1791. From 1805, the buildings acquired by an industrialist, Jean-Pierre Horem, were used as a spinning and weaving mill.

The three-aisled, non-vaulted church was demolished in 1793. The facade of the chapter house, the two-aisled, vaulted cellar known as the “Salle des Cacaudières” and the kitchen have been preserved. The gatehouse, which is used for agriculture, has a round-arched entrance and a Gothic window on the upper floor, which may have belonged to the former tourist chapel. The remaining buildings were erected in the 18th century. They have been registered as a Monument historique since 1927 .
