Combourg ( Conborn or Comboute in Gallo , Komborn in Breton ) is a French municipality with 5940 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Malo and the canton of Combourg . It is located 36 km south-east of Saint-Malo am Linon and is nicknamed the cradle of romance because François-René de Chateaubriand spent part of his youth here.

history

Since the Gallo-Roman period Combourg held a strategic position. Until around the year 1000 the place suffered from raids by the Vikings . The Seigneurie Combourg consisted of about 15 parishes and a dozen estates. It was set up by Guingéné (or Junkéné), Archbishop of Dol , for his younger brother, Riwallon de Dol (1015-1065). It was also the archbishop who had the castle built. In return, he obliged the Lords of Combourg to take care of the military defense of the archdiocese, including the supreme command of the episcopal army. The lordship of Combourg remained in the hands of the descendants of Riwallons until the death of Yseult de Dol in 1197. Their son from their marriage to Harsculf de Soligné († 1197), Jean III. de Dol, took his mother's name. Other owners of the estate were the Châteaugiron families called Malestroit, Rieux, Le Châtel, Montjean, Acigné and finally Coëtquen, who in 1575 achieved the elevation of the Seigneurie to a county . The last member of the family sold the county to the parents of Châteaubriand on May 3, 1761. The place has had a train station on the Rennes – Saint-Malo railway since 1864 .
