Mont-Dol is a French commune with 1,093 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany .
geography
The place is on the hill of the same name. This mound consists mainly of 525 million year old granite stone . It reaches a height of 62 meters.
In the north, the municipality has an extremely short stretch of coast. This is located between the neighboring communities Le Vivier-sur-Mer (northwest) and Cherrueix (northeast). Mont-Dol is also bordered by Baguer-Pican in the east, Dol-de-Bretagne in the south, Roz-Landrieux in the south-west, La Fresnais in the west and Hirel in the north-west. In the west, the municipal boundary is formed by the Guyoult River. The Rennes - Saint-Malo railway line crosses the municipality to the south-east.
history
In the past, Mont-Dol was an island. At that time, the Mont-Dol was similar to the Mont-Saint-Michel . According to a legend, the sea retreated in 709. During the Second World War there were a total of four German bunkers in Mont-Dol .
Between 1872 and 1874 the archaeologist Simon Sirodot excavated a prehistoric site at the foot of Mont-Dol. Around 110,000 year old traces of Neanderthals were found there .
