Saint-Coulomb ( Breton Sant-Kouloum ) is a French municipality with 2707 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany .
geography
The municipality is located between Saint-Malo and Cancale and 70 kilometers from the Breton capital Rennes .
history
The congregation takes its name from the Irish monk Columban , who landed on Guesclin Beach near Saint-Colomb in 580 and began missionary work in Europe.
There was already a small fortress around 450 BC, remains of which can still be found today. Allegedly the Sarrezen king , who was on the run from the Carolingians , landed on a beach near Saint-Colomb . He settled on an island where he lived for thirty years. When he heard of the imminent arrival of Charlemagne , he fled again, leaving a child behind. Charles the Great called it Glay Acquin . This later became Guesclin . This family ruled the village for a long time. Around 1254, the village lord built a fortress that made for easier defense towards the interior. In the Middle Ages, the Plessis-Bertrand family acquired control of Saint-Coulomb, Cancale and neighboring villages up to the city walls of Saint-Malo. The ruins of Le Plessis-Bertrand Castle , which was destroyed in the Wars of Religion in 1598, still stand today . The rulers also owned the mill on the Mer du Lupine , which already existed around the year 1200. Today you can see the only dune on the coast of Ille-et-Vilaine. In the 17th century, wealthy shipowners from Saint-Malo in Saint-Coulomb built Malouinières , large country houses. There are still almost twenty such houses in the Saint-Coulomb area. During the French Revolution - the village was called Coulomb Rocher at the time - there were also civilian casualties. In 1911 Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette bought a house in Saint-Coulomb. It stayed there until 1926. During the Second World War there were several German bunkers near Saint-Coulomb that were supposed to prevent an Allied landing on the coast. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the local economy shifted its focus away from fishing towards growing vegetables.
